Depraved indifference. This is what the Lord God will charge me with on the day I go to meet Him; if I am indifferent to the sorrow, misery, and – most importantly – the second death of hell that is the fruit of sin – why would our Lord not see this as a violation of True Charity? So, how could this abortion initiative soon to be voted on, not be spoken of? This matter of abortion is not just a modern concoction of the modern Church. It has been a part of the Teachings of the Church going back to the Apostles. The Didache was the compilation of the oral teachings from the Apostles. In the early days of the Church, the Didache was considered by a number of the early Church Fathers to be a part of the New Testament. ’Even after the Council of Damasus, the Didache is still considered to be a part of Sacred Tradition – equal to Sacred Scripture. In this collection, Chapter 2, paragraph 2, we are told ‘thou shalt not kill a child by abortion, neither shalt thou slay it when born.” As always, I beg you: if you have had an abortion, please come see us in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In addition, in my confessional, there are a number of business cards to help you reach out to Project Rachel and Project Joseph if you need help to heal this wound. God wants to heal you; your baby wants you healed; I want you healed. This matter is uncomfortable to be sure. Yet, I have seen more tears and misery from the sins against sexuality and Pro-Life than all other sins combined. It is because the self-donation of sexuality and life touches the very core of who a person is. This is the reason a priest cannot be indifferent and fail to speak against the proposed Missouri Constitutional Amendment 3 allowing restriction-free abortion; a priest – a baptismal priest as well as an ordained priest – cannot be indifferent to the death, sorrow, misery, and most importantly the second death that will flow from it. Let us be careful out there.
