Last weekend I spent time with our 8th graders and parents in Washington DC. It is true that the subtitle of this trip is the “Government Shutdown,” but we were able to get most of the planned activities in. Two different events were very touching for me: the Pro Life March and the Holocaust Museum. Both of these dealt with the same issue of respect for life. We know in our country there has been about 58 million abortions since 1973. This is about 10 times the number of lives lost during the Holocaust according to Bishop Barron.
What hits the most were all the pictures that are shown in the Holocaust Museum and for so many who tour the museum, the pile of shoes that were left behind. Fr. Kevin said so eloquently at the morning Mass on Jan. 22 that we have to be consistent in our Pro-Life stance in our lives, otherwise we are hypocrites. Who is that person or persons in our lives which we have difficulty respecting or treating with dignity? It really is a reflective question for all of us to think about as we examine our own consciences. God does forgive and does give us the grace needed to overcome our sinful nature.
