Did you know that opening prayer at Mass is actually called the “Collect”? Why it is called the “Collect” is because it is a prayer which is to gather the prayers of all the people in church. Before the priest prays the prayer, he says, "Let us pray." It is a time for a little quiet and reflection, putting ourselves in the presence of God. “What are you praying for that day?” God then gathers our prayers to Himself.
As we gather this Memorial Day weekend, let us not forget to pray for all service men and women, especially those overseas and in harm’s way. Of course, the day is praying for those who gave their lives for us to enjoy the freedoms which we have. I know that there are a lot of problems in the country, but it is still one of the best places to live in the world. Our freedom to worship, which we do so frequently, is a great benefit and right in our country.
