As we celebrate Pentecost, it a reminder about the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is also an opportunity to make those aware who have never been confirmed that one should be confirmed before they are married in the Church. Confirmation completes the Sacraments of Initiation.
Here is a recent interesting experience of one of the sponsors for Confirmation. Archbishop Carlson was going to ask the Confirmandi questions before their Confirmation, but he made the comment, I should just ask the sponsor the questions. Would you be able to answer the basic questions of our faith if Archbishop Carlson or anyone else would ask you? You should!
Okay, here is the once-a-year talk on appropriate attire for Mass. Interesting comments: “No, I cannot bring up the gifts.” Why? “Because I am not dressed correctly.” Thus we can dress correctly for Mass, but not for bringing up the gifts. I guess I do not see the difference?
Someone recently went to Europe and mentioned the dress code at the Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. “First of all the dress code is strictly enforced there. No shorts, bare shoulders or miniskirts. This applies to both men and women.”
One of the comments which I have often heard, “Do you want me to come to Mass, or not? Does Jesus really care?” I guess I will raise the question, what is modest dress for Mass? Everyone has their own opinion.
The guideline of the church in making our decisions is to use our conscience, but also the obligation is to form it according to the teaching of Jesus and the Church. If you notice, there are men and women who do dress differently when performing a ministry at Mass. As they say, let your conscience be your guide!
