Throughout the months of September through May, we offer a Children's Liturgy of the Word at the Sunday morning 9:00 am and 11:00 am Mass. This includes children ages 3 years up to those in second grade.
It is a time during Mass when the children move into another space to hear the Word of the Lord relayed to them in a special way which helps them understand the message of the Gospel for that day.
A volunteer Catechist reads the Scripture Readings to the children from the Children’s Lectionary or from a Children’s Bible. They then take a few minutes to explain what was read in a way that makes sense to children.
You would be provided with a binder that gives you the readings for the Sundays you have volunteered for. in that same binder there are pages with explanations about the readings and directions for leading discussions with the children. you and I would work out a time to meet and I would give you an idea of what a session might look like.
The time with the children is a small amount of the Mass, primarily only during the ratings and homily. An usher usually comes down to let the volunteers know when it is the proper time to bring the children back up. A commitment is only about 6 or 7 times during the year.
If you think you might be interested in Children’s Liturgy of the Word and would like to know more it, I would love to hear from you!
